Opel’s hugely popular Zafira MPV, which has been catering to families and professionals alike since 1999 – who found the need for a spacious, flexible and comfortable vehicle capable of seating seven – is now in its third generation.
Staying true to its roots of offering a flexible, comfortable seven-seat environment, the new Opel Zafira* continues with the tried and tested (optional) qualities of its predecessor such as the Flex7® seating system, AGR-certified ergonomic front seats, and the FlexFix® bicycle carrier, whilst offering a bold new design and a host of connectivity and infotainment options, bringing the Zafira into the 21st century and beyond.
Depending on trim levels, the new Zafira is available with Opel’s newest-generation IntelliLink infotainment system, compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Also available is OnStar, the acclaimed personal connectivity and service assistant which is able to transform the new Zafira into a mobile 4G/LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot for driver and passengers.
The Zafira’s sophisticated new design is punctuated with double chrome wing Daytime Running Lights – the upper one doubles as an LED blinker – adding to the striking impression the new Zafira makes with its solid, sporty and dynamic front design.
“The new Zafira’s front design takes over key features from the new, award-winning Opel Astra and is an integral part of Opel’s model portfolio. The chiselled double wing Daytime Running Lights bring sophistication that also flows into the interior. With the completely redesigned instrument panel, the cockpit is clearer, tidier and more user-friendly,” says Mark Adams, Vice President GM Europe Design.
Flexible, And Then Some
Flexibility is at the forefront of what makes the Zafira a true family companion. Since 1999 the Zafira has managed to offer a perfect blend of exceptional versatility and optimum comfort primarily due to Flex7® seating which has been this MPVs signature versatility feature.
Ever since the first Zafira generation, the Zafira has offered spacious room for up to seven people – all without the bothersome removal or re-installation of seats. Passengers in the second row can enjoy the cabin transformation into a spacious and comfortable lounge. Thanks to a sophisticated folding mechanism, the back of the middle seat in the second row folds down and rotates to offer comfortable armrests for the passengers in the outer seats. These also slide to the rear and towards the centre of the vehicle, enabling the lounge seating system to provide the especially generous leg and shoulder room like in a much larger premium-class sedan.
When up to seven people are on board the Zafira, two passengers comfortably travel in the optional third row that includes a centre console with two cupholders. With the Easy Entry function, the seatbacks and cushions of the two outer seats in the centre row are easily folded down for comfortable entry and exit. Should a larger cargo area be needed, the third row of seats can also be folded down flush with the floor of the luggage compartment, thus creating a level load surface. This emphasis on personal comfort makes the Zafira much more than just a family vehicle – Opel designers have turned the flexible interior into a place to relax and enjoy the spacious atmosphere, be it on a business trip or a vacation.
But the new Zafira offers much more than “just” an extremely comfortable way to travel. The travelling lounge can easily double as a small transporter. In a 5-seat configuration, the Zafira can carry a minimum load volume of 710 litres (increasing to 1,860 litres when the second-row seats are folded down).
A host of optional extra storage and further flexibility add-ons can be specced too, such as the FlexRail® centre console which features a modular storage system including a large storage box and cup-holders that slides on aluminium rails. The FlexConnect adaptor allows for the installation of a clothes hangers or the iPad holder, while the FlexOrganizer® package keeps the cargo area tidy using a boot partition and side nets as well as fastening hooks – particularly handy for rogue grocery bags. An ingenious solution for cycling enthusiasts is the FlexFix® bicycle carrier which is integrated into the rear bumper, sliding out like a drawer and capable of accommodating four bicycles with a total weight of 80 kilogrammes.
Making Driving More Entertaining
Opel offers two newest-generation IntelliLink infotainment systems in the new Zafira that perfectly blend into the new, clearly designed cockpit. The standard R4.0 IntelliLink system not only comes with the customary clear 7-inch colour touchscreen, USB and Bluetooth® interface for audio streaming and viewing photographs, videos and films or making a telephone call via the hands-free module – the infotainment system is also compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It brings the Apple and Google smartphone apps certified for in-car use into the vehicle quickly and easily. As soon as the connection with a USB cable is made, the smartphone interface is adapted to the 7-inch touchscreen and displayed clearly whilst simultaneously charging your smartphone.
A Powerful, Flexible Engine Companion
The top-of-the-line engine in the Zafira portfolio is the 147kW 1.6 ECOTEC Direct Injection Turbo. With maximum torque of 280 Nm, it accelerates the compact van from zero to 100 km/h in just 8.8 seconds and takes it to a top speed of 220 km/h. The powerhouse masters the sprint from 80 to 120 km/h in fifth gear in just 8.3 seconds.
